Why do photography sessions cost so much? | Bay Area Lifestyle Photographer

Jun 19, 2021

Have you ever wanted a family photography session but were reluctant to book due to cost?  Often clients ask, “Why are photography sessions and photographs so expensive?”.

Hiring a professional photographer is definitely an investment and you may not know or understand the hours that a photographer spends before and after a session.

Pre-Session Preparation

A great deal of time is spent before a session communicating with you so that you know exactly what to expect during your session. I start with an initial phone call to make sure that I understand your vision for the session, and that your vision matches my style of photography.

After you book, I send over a questionnaire that helps me get to know your family better before the session. I want to make sure your photographs tell your family’s story. I send emails with style and wardrobe advice and how to prepare the kids (and husband) for the session. I’ll even FaceTime with you to help you choose outfits for everyone!

I make sure that you know exactly what to expect before, during, and after your session. The better prepared you are, the more stress-free the sessions are.  And this leads to better images.

During Your Session

My sessions usually last 1-2 hours and I don’t like to put a time limit on my sessions.  I want everyone to be relaxed before we start, and I recognize that it takes some people longer to warm up to being in front of the camera, especially the little ones. I always start by getting to know the kids and making sure they are comfortable. After all, you want to capture their true personalities, not forced smiles.

I always tell my clients that my sessions last as long as it takes to capture their family and I don’t want time constraints to add stress to a session.

Post-Session Editing

After your session, the fun part starts for me. No, really, I love editing your images! But choosing the best images and hand-editing each one can take 2-3 times as long as the actual session. I always want your images to be perfect before I present them to you in your gallery.

And I don’t just present you with a gallery of images. Your gallery starts with a custom slideshow. I encourage you to gather everyone around and view your slideshow on the big screen.

I don’t disappear after your gallery is delivered. After you’ve seen your images, it’s time to get together to help you decide how to display your images in your home. I’ll even help you find just the perfect spot on your walls for your precious memories.

Your Memories Are Priceless

Let’s face it, everyone wants a bargain.  That’s why Groupon, promo codes, and coupons are so popular. But there are some things worth paying for.  My goal with each session is to create beautiful images that you can turn into works of art that will be displayed and treasured for generations to come, and your memories are priceless!
