Many of the lifestyle family sessions that I do are outdoors and since we live in the Bay Area, we are blessed with amazing weather the majority of the year. But wouldn’t you know it, you’ve scheduled your family session, and the forecast calls for rain. Now what do you do?
Don’t panic. I’ve got you covered. Here are a few suggestions if the weather is bad on your session date.
Switch to an in-home session
I’ll tell you a little secret. I really love in-home sessions. They are so intimate and personal and really provide the perfect backdrop to tell a family’s story. There’s probably no other place where we are more comfortable than our home. I know you may be thinking that your home is too small, or too messy, or too whatever. But that’s just not the case. I do all of my newborn session in-home, and I’ve never had a home that I couldn’t work with.
So what if your home is messy. Life is messy and your home, mess and all, is part of your story. I guarantee when you look back at your images, you’re not going to see the things that are out of place. You’re going to see the people you love the most.
With an in-home session we can capture your family doing the things that you love to do together. Some of my favorite moments to capture during an in-home session are playing on the floor with the kids, everyone snuggling on the couch watching a movie, or baking cookies in the kitchen.
Reschedule
If your heart is set on an outdoor session, we may need to reschedule. Even though my calendar fills up quickly, I always leave some wiggle room in case someone needs to reschedule. This may mean that we have to be flexible, and maybe your session will be on a weekday instead of a weekend, but we can always make it work.
And sometimes rescheduling doesn’t mean changing days. Sometimes we can just change the time of your session. I always recommend that your session be the activity of the day, especially with younger children. That way, if we have to change the time of your session due to weather, it’s an easy pivot.
Since the weather during the rainy season can be unpredictable, I don’t usually reschedule until the day of the session. Often when rain is forecast, it’s just cloudy and overcast, and we can work with that.
