How old should your baby be for newborn photos?
You just found out you’re pregnant, and you are already planning for your newborn’s first photography session. You start googling newborn photographers, but you’re confused with all of the information you find. Do you need to schedule a session before your baby is two weeks old, or can you wait until he’s four weeks old?
That is the one question I hear most from potential clients. And my answer is…..You should schedule your session when it feels right for you and your baby!
When is the newborn period!
- Technically, the newborn period is the first four weeks after birth, and lifestyle newborn sessions usually take place in the first month of life. Still, I believe you can capture beautiful newborn images after the first month.
- Sometimes, there are things that can cause a delay in a newborn session. Newborns can be born early and need to spend some time in the NICU before joining the rest of the family at home. I’ve done newborn sessions at six or even eight weeks.
Every session is unique!
- Every newborn is unique, and every session should be unique as well. One size does not fit all, and that certainly applies to newborn photography. It helps to consider which moments you want your session to capture. Newborns that are only a couple of weeks old will often sleep through the entire session, and there is little interaction between the baby and other family members. Waiting until the little one is 5 or 6 weeks old will allow the photographer to capture moments of interaction.
Mom needs to be ready too!
- Since your lifestyle session will also include images of mom, dad, and siblings, mom needs time to recover and feel her best as well. Your images are an investment and an heirloom to treasure for years to come. You don’t want to hide your images away because you weren’t feeling your best at the time of the session.
Having a new baby on the way is an exciting time in your life. Don’t waste time stressing over the timing of their first photography session!
