“I keep meaning to schedule family photos but life is just so busy….”
Don’t let your story go untold!
Does this sound familiar?
Growing up, I loved pulling out our old family albums and would sit on the floor for hours looking at the images. My dad was a photographer when I was born, so there were plenty of photographs of me and my sister as kids. I also loved looking at photos of my parents when they were young, and my grandparents. I envisioned my own future children looking through our family albums.
When my first child was born, I wanted to document every milestone, so I took rolls of photos and had grand visions of those albums I wanted to create. It was really important to me that I create a visual timeline of our life as a family so that one day she could show her children and grandchildren.
Well, I’m sure you can guess what happened next. Life happened! Being a mom is hard work and pretty soon, I had boxes of photos and I had no clue when they were taken. And let me tell you, by the time the second one came along, the dream of my beautiful albums went right out the window. Even worse, when I switched to digital, I had thousands of images on my computer that never even saw the light of day!
As both kids got older, it got harder to think about capturing life’s moments. Between school, sports, and extra-curricular activities, who has time to schedule family photos? So believe me, I’ve been right where you are.
I’ve got the solution!
As a photographer, I want every family to have visual documentation of their story. After all, what’s not documented gets forgotten. So how could I make it easy for my clients to document their stories year after year?
I asked myself what were some of the barriers that busy moms faced when it came to scheduling family photos. Obviously, the cost is one. Professional photographs are an investment. And, we’ve already discussed that time is another barrier. We think about scheduling a session, but somehow just never get around to doing it.
So I wondered how I could make it easy to schedule and pay for family sessions and eliminate all the hassle.
That’s why I’m launching something brand new for 2021. I’m calling it The Book Club.
The Book Club is designed to make it easy and (more) affordable to plan for regular sessions. To give you a predictable, budget-able, reliable way to fill your shelves and walls with beautiful images that showcase your family over the years. To give your future grandchildren and great-grandchildren something to treasure for years to come.
All the details
EACH YEAR, MEMBER FAMILIES WILL RECEIVE
• a full-length session. (This can be a family, maternity, or newborn session that is a custom, 90-120 minute photo session in your home or on location at some special or photogenic spot that we decide on beforehand.)
• the entire gallery of printable digital files from the session
• a $200 print credit to be used in the online gallery store on any product I offer (prints, frames, albums, etc.)
• no separate session fee
• automatic monthly billing
• priority self-scheduling
• unlimited access to an online gallery containing all of your photos as we create them over the years (which makes for a beautiful, shareable, and fully backed-up digital family album)
•access to purchase unlimited mini sessions, which are great for things like maternity shoots, birthday parties, holiday card sessions, or grandparent visits (and are not available to non-members)
•the option to renew your membership for the following year at the same, locked-in rate (this year’s prices are guaranteed to be the lowest I will offer).
• The number of memberships will be limited to keep my schedule manageable so that I can truly give members a premium experience.
• I’m keeping the enrollment period short so that I have a clear picture of the year. Enrollment will start at 10am on 1/1, and will remain available until 11:59pm on 1/14 (unless they sell out before that).
Book club collections
$70/month plus tax ($1100 value)
Narrative Club members will be entitled to one full family session per year, along with the entire gallery of digital files from their session, and a $200 print credit to be used on any products in the online store.
All additional perks and member benefits are detailed above.
$95/month plus tax ($1615 value)
Includes all the benefits of The Narrative Club, plus an annual individual mini portrait session for each child in the family, including 10 digital files (normally priced at $475 per child).
Each child will be photographed individually to capture a variety of simple portraits that showcase the child’s personality and the specific age/stage they’re in.
This is a great way to document a child’s growth that is essentially a way, way better version of school photos 🙂
All sessions will be held during the month of May and will be self-scheduled. The calendar for mini portraits sessions will open on 3/1.
$110/month plus tax ($2115 value)
Includes everything in the Narrative and Novella Clubs, plus an archival 20 page, 8×8” lay-flat album to display the images from your session.
I have always been a huge proponent of albums as my favorite way of showcasing family images and love the idea of my Book Club members having an actual, physical book on their shelves from each of our sessions. There’s no better way to document your story!
Novel club members can self-design their album using images from their session. The albums have linen covers and can be embossed with 3 lines of text.
If you still have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out! I understand that this is a new concept, and am here to clarify anything that you’re unsure of!
How do I schedule a session?
The calendar will be self-scheduled by the members themselves on a first-come, first-served basis. I will release the calendar 3 months in advance, however, if you have dates that are further out, just shoot me an email.
How do the optional mini sessions work?
The mini-session option is something I wanted to offer to members simply because sometimes they come in handy. Optional mini-sessions will be 30 minutes long, include a complete set of digital files, and cost $450, billed separately.
Let’s say you want to get a few professional family photos when your parents and siblings all come to town for an event, or you’re pregnant and would like a few photos of your belly but would rather schedule your “real” session when the baby comes, or you and your partner both need updated headshots… these are all examples where a mini-session might be scheduled.
I don’t offer these to the general public, but they’re going to be an option for all my members at any time, assuming I have availability. Don’t get thrown off, though: if you don’t need a mini-session, no problem. If you want it, it’s there.
Please note that mini-sessions need to be scheduled directly through me, rather than through the self-scheduling calendar.
Will I get my digital files right away, even if I’ve only made one or two payments before the session?
Yep! Once you sign up and make that initial payment, you can book your session immediately. Further, you will receive your gallery on my normal schedule (typically 1-2 weeks after the session) and will be able to download your files and use your print credit as soon as you have access to the gallery.
I don’t really think I need family photos every year. Can I buy a membership this year, drop out for next year, then join again later?
In theory you can… but there are a couple of important issues to consider.
Issue 1: My guess is that even if the membership doesn’t fill completely this year, by next year it will be full and spots might get hard to come by if members continue to renew (I don’t anticipate adding new memberships, just offering any unrenewed spots during the annual enrollment period).
Issue 2: it’s likely that the price will increase in future years. By maintaining continuous membership, you’re guaranteed to be locked in at the current rate. If you drop out and re-join, you will have to do so at the rates offered that year.
What if I sign up and there aren’t any session dates available that work for me?
While I can’t guarantee that a specific date and time will be available when you go to sign up, I am putting absolutely everything I can on the self-scheduling calendar. The likelihood is that if you don’t drag your feet to the very end of enrollment and have at least a tiny bit of wiggle room in your calendar, you’ll have several options.
“Our most treasured family heirloom are our sweet family memories. …”
In future years, members will be asked whether they would like to renew or terminate their membership prior to the new membership enrollment period. There is no commitment beyond the year, and there will be no surprise renewals.
If you choose to renew but would like to change your subscription level (up or down), you are welcome to do so without penalty, though offerings and pricing may change year to year.
What will I be able to get with my $200 print credit?
I offer a lot of really lovely items in my online store, and the print credit can be used toward any of them. Fine art prints are a perennial favorite, as are albums (you can put that $200 toward an album upgrade if you’re a Novel Club member and want a bigger book or one with more pages).
$200 more than covers an 11×14” framed print, an 11×14” canvas, or four calendars (holiday shopping = done). There are several other options, but those should give you an idea!
Can I purchase a membership as a gift?
Yes, but please note that the family that is photographed during the first year of enrollment will be the only family who can use that membership in future years.
How many photos can I put in my album if I join the Novel Club?
Albums are 20 pages long, so they will most likely hold as many of the images from your session as you’d like to include. That said, if you like album designs with fewer images per page, you may want to add pages. As I mentioned earlier, your print credit can be used toward album upgrades!
I have four kids. If I join the Novella or Novel Club, do they all receive a mini-session in May?
Yes! The Novella and Novel Club memberships include an annual mini-session for each child (18 and under) in the family, along with 10 files from each session, no matter if you’ve got one kid or ten.
