The Latest in Family Photography Trends
Has it been a while since you had family photos? Maybe you remember having photos as a kid, dressing up, and heading over to the local studio. Those days are over!
In recent years, family photography has taken a more nontraditional approach. Families are now hiring lifestyle photographers that specialize in capturing moments and documenting stories rather than taking posed portraits.
Here are a few family photography trends that we will definitely be seeing more of.
Keep it close to home
Because families naturally feel most comfortable in their own homes, this has become one of the best places to take family photos. And don’t worry, you don’t have to have an expensive or beautiful house for your family photography session. After all, your home is as unique as your family. When you look back at your images in 20 years, you aren’t going to notice if there was a little clutter; you’re going to see the bond and connection that you shared with those you love the most.
And, In-home sessions are a great time to kick off your shoes and just be you. Whether you’re all snuggling on the couch or making cookies in the kitchen, these are the moments you will want to capture and remember.

Bright lights, big city
If you’re interested in an urban setting for your lifestyle family session, there are a number of great locations you can take advantage of. Urban settings are full of fabulous brick walls, murals, archways, and doorways that make an amazing backdrop for your unique family. Take a walk in your favorite neighborhood, or stop in at your favorite ice cream shop.
Have an adventure
Why not plan your session around an activity that you and your family love and make it an adventure to remember? Does your little one love to skateboard? Put on your kneepads, and let’s meet at the local skatepark. Does your family love to hike? I’m in; let’s head to your favorite trail. My kids are grown now, but when I look back at photos of them as children, the ones that really tug at my heart are the ones that show them doing the things they loved to do.
Get Caught Up in a moment
Today’s lifestyle photography sessions are designed to capture you living your life as it is happening. Your family session should capture your family’s unique personalities. During your session, you can relax and focus on spending quality time with your loved ones. Authentic memories like reading to your toddlers, sisters laughing together, or even the eye rolls from your teenagers make for amazing candid images that will document this precious time in your lives.
Keep it casual
The days of everyone wearing matching, formal outfits are gone; more and more families are choosing to dress casually instead. Choose outfits that make you feel beautiful and comfortable. You might even consider letting the little ones choose their own outfits! We recently met our daughter and her family in Paris. Our three-year-old granddaughter was wearing a Minne Mouse tutu and headband in every photo. I mean every photo! But that’s her at this phase, and that’s what I’m going to want to remember.
Family photography has come a long way in recent years! Consider hiring a lifestyle photographer to capture your story if you’re thinking about scheduling a family session. Lifestyle photographers specialize in documenting candid moments and natural interactions – meaning you can avoid the cheesy posed portraits of yesteryear. Keep an eye out for these latest family photography trends, and get ready to schedule your own lifestyle session!
