“When should I schedule my maternity session?” This is the number one question that I hear from prospective clients. Followed closely by the second question that every expectant client wants to know, “What should I wear for my maternity session?”
Being pregnant is such a wondrous time. You’re growing an entirely new human being inside you. You may feel beautiful and amazing, but you may also feel sick and bloated and unattractive. All of those feelings are valid. A maternity photography session is a chance to capture your changing body and celebrate the new life you created.
When should you schedule?
- I don’t think there is a hard and fast answer to this question. Photographers typically recommend scheduling your session between 30-35 weeks. But every woman is different, and every pregnancy is different. I’ve done sessions at 25 weeks and 38 weeks. You want to schedule when your bump is big enough to show off, but no so big that you don’t want to show it off!
What should you wear?
- I love fitted maxi dresses as they show off your bump and look great blowing in the wind. A belt positioned just above your bump will define your waistline and also accentuates your baby bump. As with other sessions, it’s best to stick with neutral colors or solid colors. You want your images to remain timeless and don’t want to look back and think, “What was I wearing?” Avoid bold patterns or stripes. You want your bump to be the star of the show, not your wardrobe. Avoid large, long necklaces that will steal the show, but scarves and hats make great accessories.
- And don’t forget to bring an extra outfit. A great idea is to have one dressy outfit and a casual outfit.
