Scheduling a family photography session shouldn’t be stressful. But as a mom, I know that it can be! We moms worry that the kids won’t cooperate, or that our spouse/partner will grumble about have to take photos. We’re often so busy worrying about everyone else that we forget to take care of ourselves. So before your next session, check out these simple tips.

  1. Remember why you’re having photographs taken. When I look back at family photos with my children through the years, I find that I don’t focus on how I looked. I focus on how small my kids were and how much they’ve changed. We all get caught up in how we look. I’ve had times when my weight wasn’t where I wanted it, and I worried that it would show up in photos. By focusing on your little ones and spouse, the connection between you will shine through, and that’s what you’ll see when you look back at your images.
  2. Choose comfortable clothes. If you aren’t comfortable with what you’re wearing, it will show! Choose a neutral wardrobe without large prints or patterns. Neutral colors are universally flattering and timeless. Don’t forget to accessorize with scarves, belts, jewelry, or hats.
  3. Put together a small bag to take to your session with lip gloss, chapstick, a mirror, and a hairbrush. Your session should be fun and stress-free. If you are worried about how your hair looks or whether your lips are chapped, it will show in your photos. Take a moment to sneak a peek in the mirror and freshen up.
  4. Focus on you! That’s right! I’m a mom, and I’ve been there. You’ve scheduled a long overdue family photography session, and it feels like you need a checklist to make sure you don’t forget anything. You’ve made sure that everyone’s outfit is clean and searched high and low for matching hair bows and shoes for your little ones. You’ve spent countless time getting your spouse on board. Don’t forget about you. Pamper yourself a little. Schedule a blow-out or head over to Sephora for a makeover. Try a long, hot bath or shower the night before. And don’t forget to get plenty of rest to prevent dark under-eye circles. When you feel good, you look good!
